We are Sarah, Edd, Katie and Thomas Rendell.
We live in Burnham On Sea. Katie is 10 and Thomas 7. Katie has Global Developmental delay and is under review for Autism.
Our first outing with Escape was to bowling on 15th April 2010. I decided that we should join Escape as it was getting harder every year to find suitable social activities for Katie to be involved in and I did not like taking her places and people staring at her. We were members for 7 months before that but it took me that long to pluck up the courage to go to an event. The encouragement I needed came from Abbey who phoned me one day noticing that we had been members for a while but she had never seen us at any events. Abbey kindly came to visit me at home. It was lovely to hear all about the great activities Escape offered and the next one was bowling and it helped because Abbey said she would be there so at least I would know one person. On the drive there I was really worried as i did not know what to expect.
My fears were soon overcome when i walked through the door to see Abbey’s smiling face there to greet me. Everybody was so welcoming and kind, this really helped me realise that this friendly group was definitely the way forward for us. The journey home was a happy one, talking about the lovely time we all had and what shall we do with Escape next!
Katie and Tom love going to the events and it is so nice for Katie that she can be herself because she is surrounded by people that understand and don’t stare which makes us all feel comfortable.
Since then we have been on quite a few events. We had a lovely family day out at Crealy, saw Postman Pat at Weston Playhouse, Fish and chip supper and family quiz, went to the Christmas party and saw Santa. We have also been swimming which can be a stressful activity but going with Escape is enjoyable for us all. It is nice that if an outing is on but Edd is working I still feel able to take Katie and Tom on my own as being with the Escape group makes it easier to deal with any difficult situations that may arise.
Edd went along to the Bridgwater carnival Nov 2010 to sell carnival programmes to help raise funds for the group even though it was a cold wet long day he was pleased to be able to give his time to raise funds and be able to give something back to them as Escape organises such great family events at affordable prices. We have got lots to look forward to this year we are going to see Thomas the Tank Engine at the Bristol Hippodrome and we are going to London in August which we are all very excited about.
It is so nice to have events to look forward to.
